Suzanne E. Tallichet, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. She has also served as the Director of the Sociology MA Program for over two decades. As an instructor, she developed and taught courses in Appalachian sociology, environmental sociology and animals and society. Her early research focused on women coal miners in the central Appalachia resulting in book chapters, journal articles and her book, Daughters of the Mountain: Women Coal Miners in Central Appalachia (Penn State Press 2006). After volunteering several years at the local animal shelter during the 1990s, she focused her research on the link between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence publishing numerous articles about the link using male inmate samples and several book chapters in edited books. More recently her work concerns the companion animal-human bond, compassion fatigue in shelter workers, and female animal abusers and the link. She serves as a regular reviewer for the Journal of Interpersonal Violence and the Journal of Appalachian Studies. She earned a BA in psychology from Franklin and Marshall College and an MA in journalism and a Ph.D. in rural sociology from the Pennsylvania State University.
