Gretchen M. Reevy earned a Ph.D. in Psychology at University of California, Berkeley, specializing in personality, and is Lecturer Emerita at California State University, East Bay. Around 2010, she began to apply her academic training to the animal welfare field. She has investigated people’s attachments to their animal companions, especially cats, focusing largely on the ways in which people’s demographic characteristics and personality traits predict attachments to animal companions. Her work has been published in Anthrozoos and The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, and she has frequently presented at conferences in both animal welfare/human-animal bond and psychology. The purpose of the research is to determine which human characteristics tend to be associated with stronger attachments to and better treatment of animal companions, yielding information which may lead to improvements in both animal welfare and human well-being.
