Dr Jennifer Mather is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Psychology, University of Lethbridge.  She received a MSc in Biology from Florida State and a Doctorate in Psychology from Brandeis University.  Her research has focused on cephalopods and particularly octopuses but also on welfare of invertebrates.  In over 100 papers she investigated octopus personalities, play and cognition but also squid skin displays and cephalopod consciousness and thus welfare. She is co-editor of the book Cephalopod Cognition 2014, the Springer series book on Welfare of Invertebrate Animals in 2019 and a special issue of the journal Animals on Invertebrate Welfare, published as a book in 2025.
