Dr. Audrey Kali is a Professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and Performance at Framingham State University in Massachusetts. Her research, creative work, and pedagogy focus on the perceptual intersections of visual and verbal rhetoric in the communication of animal welfare and environmental science to public audiences. In her documentary film, Farm and Red Moon, she examines how video images of animals in the meat industry become emotional barriers to viewers who want to make changes in agricultural policy. Her current work on the communication of insect biodiversity promotes interdisciplinarity between the arts and the sciences. She combines her creative work as a macro photographer of insects with her research on how the rhetoric of pesticide manufacturers manipulate consumer fears for profit. Recently, she presented her research on the role of aesthetics in the use of photographic images for science communication about biodiversity at the International Conference on the Image at the Sorbonne. At the Association for Art History Conference at the University of Cambridge, she featured her work on how print images in the advocacy of environmental sustainability engage public audiences and invoke empathy more than digital screens.
