Valery Feigin, M.D., Ph.D.

Professor Valery Feigin is the director of AUT’s National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neuroscience (NISAN), the only national research institute solely dedicated to studying the epidemiology and prevention of neurological disorders in New Zealand.

He is also Affiliate Professor of the Department of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington; President of the International Association on Neurology and Epidemiology; Honorary Professor of the Novosibirsk State Medical University, Russia, and Visiting Professor of the Capital Medical University in Beijing, China. He is a Fellow Member (Academic) of the Royal Society of New Zealand, a Foreign Fellow (Academic) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. He is a member of the Advisory Working Group on Stroke for the WHO, WHO Technical Advisory Group on NCD-related Research and Innovation and is currently Co-Chair of the Global Policy Committee and Executive Committee member of the World Stroke Organization.

After graduating in medicine from the State Medical School of Novosibirsk, Russia, Professor Feigin undertook advanced training in neurology and clinical epidemiology research that has taken him from Moscow to the Mayo Clinic in America and Erasmus University in the Netherlands.

During his career, Professor Feigin has authored or co-authored over 850 academic publications (including more than 440 journal articles, including 109 in The Lancet and Lancet family journals), 12 handbooks, 26 books and chapters, and 4 patents.

Professor Feigin is the recipient of a number of prestigious national and international awards and distinctions, including the Fogarty International Centre Research Grant Award (National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke of the USA, Mayo Clinic), Bruce Shoenburg International Award and Lecture in Neuroepidemiology (American Academy of Neurology), Gedeon Richter Award for Studies on Cavinton in Acute Stroke, the World Stroke Organization President’s Award, McDarmid Medal of Royal Society of New Zealand, Stroke Association of Australasia Award, WHO Western Pacific Region Innovation Challenge Winner Award, and Health Research Council of New Zealand Liley Medal for his outstanding contribution to clinical stroke research in the area of stroke epidemiology and prevention.

Valery’s expertise in the field of epidemiology and neurology has been recognised around the world. According to Web of Science, Valery Feigin is one of the 1% most cited scientists worldwide across all field of sciences in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022: As of 26 November 2022, Google Scholar credits him with an h-index of 129 and >262,000 citations; Scopus credits him with >139,000 citations and an h-index of 110; Web of Science credits him with >115,000 citations and an h-index of 105. Just from the last year (2021) to 2022 his citation rate is one every 15 minutes, and rising.
