Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.

Stephen R. Kaufman, MD is an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he co-preceptors a medical student course in humanities in medicine and he leads ethics instruction for ophthalmology residents. He was first author of a study on the role genetics in guiding supplement use in patients with age-related macular degeneration, and he wrote an article in a medical ethics journal on pharmaceutic “incentive” programs that compensate physicians for using more expensive medications. As co-Chair of the Medical Research Modernization Committee with Dr. Murry Cohen, he wrote numerous critiques of animal models and edited the 6-volume series Perspectives on Medical Research. As Chair of the Christian Vegetarian Association, he has published many essays on the interface between Christian faith and animal protectionism. With Nathan Braun he wrote Good News for All Creation, then he wrote Guided by the Faith of Christ, Seeking to Stop Violence and Scapegoating. He is also president of Justice for Animals Fund, a private foundation, and also Concern for Helping Animals in Israel. In addition to animal advocacy, he has strong interests in public health policy, environmental policy, economics, and philosophy.
