Dr. Andrew Fenton is a Professor of Philosophy at Dalhousie University. He specializes in animal ethics, epistemology, neuroethics, and the philosophy of animal minds. Fenton is interested in how deepening scientific understanding of the psychological capacities of various nonhuman animals should change philosophical discussions of their knowledge , agency and treatment in captivity . His published work has largely concerned animal bioethics . Fenton has been a part of three book projects : The Three Pillars of Ethical Research with Nonhuman Primates: A Work Developed in Collaboration with the National Anti-Vivisection Society ; Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief , and Neuroethics and Nonhuman Animals . The co-authored book, Chimpanzee Rights, is an expansion of a co-authored amicus brief which was submitted in support of a Non-human Rights Project effort focused on two privately owned chimpanzees. From roughly 2018-24 Fenton served as chair and co-chair of the Canadian Council on Animal Care’s Ethics Principles Subcommittee which drafted its new ethics principles document.
