Dr. Donahue is a professor in the Political Science department at Saginaw Valley State University where she teaches courses on animal politics and law, the presidency, gender and politics, terrorism, urban policy, and statistics. She has coauthored five books, most of which are about exotic captive animal law, politics, politics and history. They are American Zoos During the Depression: A New Deal for Animals, Political Animals: Public Art in American Zoos and Aquariums, The Politics of Zoos: Exotic Animals and Their Protectors, Increasing Legal Rights for Zoo Animals: Justice on the Ark, and Snakes and American Culture: A History. She has also written additional chapters of books on animal welfare and presented many conference papers on the topic. She is known nationally and internationally as an exotic captive animal law expert.
